Hey yall! As I'm sure most of you have seen by now, if you follow along with my Facebook posts, earlier this year I started playing hockey again and joined a league! On October 9th and 10th we are having a 3v3 tournament to raise money for The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation!
"The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to changing the future of cancer by funding advanced, innovative research that treats the cancer while sparing the patient."
I'm am stoked for this event for 2 reasons...
1...I absolutely love being out on the ice and I look forward to getting out there with some of my best friends.
2...(and most significantly) the cause hits home.
Like most, I have so many people I hold close to my heart who have been affected by cancer. My Nana, my grandfather, my Aunt Pompea, one of my close friend's mom, one of my moms closest friends, Mary Beth, to name a few...and one young woman in particular who I look up to and admire more and more every day.
In June of 2019, at 20 years old and planning to enter into her junior year of college, my younger cousin, Jackie, was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that grows and develops rapidly in the the body's soft muscle tissues. It has been a rocky road for everyone who loves her and, as I'm sure it goes without saying, even more tumultuous, confusing, frustrating, and exhausting for her. I continue to stand in awe of the young woman she IS. Obviously, being a "horse girl", she is one tough cookie, but this fight has taken that and multiplied it ten fold. She is 3 years younger than me and towers over me, yet I am the one who will always look up to her.
While this tournament will be a great time to get out on the ice with friends, it is so much more than that.
